Don't Pull the Covers Over Your Head!

Psalm 49: (The Message Bible) “Listen, everyone, listen— earth-dwellers, don't miss this. All you haves and have-nots, All together now: listen. I set plainspoken wisdom before you, my heart-seasoned understandings of life. I fine-tuned my ear to the sayings of the wise, I solve life's riddle with the help of a harp. So why should I fear in bad times, hemmed in by enemy malice, Shoved around by bullies, demeaned by the arrogant rich? Really! There's no such thing as self-rescue, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. The cost of rescue is beyond our means, and even then it doesn't guarantee Life forever, or insurance against the Black Hole. Anyone can see that the brightest and best die, wiped out right along with fools and dunces. They leave all their prowess behind, move into their new home, The Coffin, The cemetery their permanent address. And to think they named counties after themselves! We aren't immortal. We don't last long. Like our dogs, we age and weaken. And die. “ This morning, even before I climbed out of bed, remnants of a depressing dream pelted my brain trying to push doubts and fears into the reality of my day. Knowing deep down if I could just get to God’s Word I would find the refreshment and strength I needed challenge me for the day ahead. Before long, Psalm 49 began to speak directly to me. With economic times being as they are, it seems so easy to get sucked into a doom and gloom mindset. Meanwhile we miss the beauty that our Lord has placed all around us. As my body creaked its way to plug in the coffee pot I caught a glimpse of the beginnings of a stunning sunrise. Letting the dog out into the back yard my ears caught the song a blue bird glorifying his Creator. On my third round to the coffee pot, at the completion of my prayer time, the freshly mowed lawn out front shimmered with color and brightness. Flowers that were here for me to enjoy now would soon be gone and replaced by others even more superb in the future. Maybe it’s just because I am a Landscaper that the beauty of nature overwhelms me but sadly I know that most people miss the lessons and inspirations it provides. If listen closely and look intently the Lord has something He wants to teach us at every turn. He is always creating and sustaining, even in You!
